The women’s ASP World Tour may have a few months before its next stop (July 15th, 2008 in Brazil) but that just means some of those women can have a good time carving up the competition on the WQS. Reigning world champ Stephanie Gimore did just that this weekend, knocking out reigning world junior champion Sally Fitzgibbons in the final of the 6-star WQS Midori Pro at Newcastle’s Merewether Beach in Australia.
The payout wasn’t much ($4,500 for the top spot) but it was a marquee match-up as Fitzgibbons is sure to be a fixture on the women’s surfing scene for years to come — something Gilmore is quick to acknowledge.
“Sally really is going to be one to watch. There’s no doubt she has a great future,” Gilmore said.
