Shark sightings and even attacks aren’t all that unusual but it’s still not that common for someone to get killed, especially by a Great White. It looks like it was a Great White that attacked a 66-year-old triathlete on Friday off Solana Beach, about 20 miles northwest of San Diego.

The man, Dave Martin, was with a group of swimmers wearing wetsuits when he was attacked. One explanation for the shark’s action is because it mistook Martin for a seal as sharks base their attacks on “silhouettes” and seals were seen in the area earlier.

Martin bled to death from his injuries before he was able to be transported to a hospital. The beach was closed and water searched for the shark to no avail.
