The 2008 X Games Asia contest closed out action Saturday and American Dayne Brummet secured the win in the Skatepark Finals, edging out Tyler Hendley from California. Third place went tp Ben Bodnar and Andy Macdonald made a rare contest appearance in Park, taking fourth.
Brummet finished third in last year’s X Games Asia and defending champ took tenth.
“Every time I skate in a competition, my legs get all wobbly. I’ve done a million of these contests and I still get nervous and shaky. I feel like a squid out there,” Brummet said after the win. “That’s why I look like I’m always about to fall off my skateboard. It probably makes some of the easier tricks I do look more difficult than they actually are.”

American and Japanese Athletes Own the Day as 10th Annual X Games Asia Comes to a Close
Final Day Draws More Than 16,400 Spectators to Shanghai’s KIC Jiangwan Sports Center
Shanghai, China – With a crowd of 16,400 spectators in attendance, KIA X Games Asia finished strong on its final day of competition as world-class action in Aggressive In-line Vert, Skateboard Park, musical performances and China’s first Moto X Step Up demonstration wowed the crowd to conclude the week’s events.
“We’re tremendously pleased about how well we were received by the people of Shanghai for the second year, and equally delighted by the level of competition they were treated to by this exceptional field of athletes,” said Rick Alessandri, Senior Vice President and X Games Franchise Managing Director. “The four-day attendance of more than 52,800 once again exceeded our expectations and speaks to the potential for action sports and growth of the X Games franchise within the region. We look forward to coming back to build upon this success next year.”
Skateboard Park
In the Skateboard Park competition, the United States’ Dayne Brummet reclaimed the gold after finishing third last year and winning gold in 2006 at the Asian X Games. Scoring a solid 86.00 in his first run, Brummet put the pressure on fellow American Tyler Hendley and Australia’s Ben Bodnar, who both scored 84.33 in round one. Hendley earned the higher of the two scores in round two, winning him the silver while Bodnar ended up with bronze. American skater Andy Macdonald, who won vert gold yesterday and is known traditionally for his vert prowess, just missed the podium finishing in fourth with a score of 83.00.
“I was thrilled to be invited back to Shanghai for this year’s event,” said Brummet. “This is a special year to be competing in China because of the upcoming Olympics, so it feels great to walk away with the gold. I travel to Asia two or three times each year, and I’m starting to feel at home here now. I always feel partial to the Asian skateboarding competitions.”
Aggressive In-line Vert
Continuing their domination of the Aggressive In-line Vert competition were Japan’s Yasutoko brothers as they went one, two in this year’s contest. The younger of the Yasutoko brothers, Takeshi, joined BMX Vert champion Chad Kagy and Skateboard Vert champion Andy Macdonald as the latest to punch his ticket into the back-to-back gold club at this year’s X Games Asia. Winning the competition in his final run, Takeshi scored a 91.33, surging past both older brother Eito who won silver with a score of 88.67 and Australian Shane Yost who rounded out the podium with a score of 82.33.
“I’m exhausted, but it feels great. Competing against an incredible skater like Shane Yost and against my older brother, I felt a lot of pressure,” said Takeshi. He went on to add, “In China, in-line skating is much more popular than in Japan. At home, no one knows me, but here in Shanghai, the enthusiasm of all these cheering fans is fantastic!”
