Guy Mariano Dominates 10th Annual Transworld SKATEboarding Awards
June 14, 2008 – 12:40 am PT by GregTags: Fully Flared, Guy Mariano, Habitat, Lakai, Stefan Janoski, Tony Hawk, TWS Skateboarding Awards —

Friday the 13th was anything but a bad omen for Girl/Lakai skater Guy Mariano who swept the three categories he was nominated in, including Best Street, TWS Readers’ Choice and Best Video Part for Lakai’s “Fully Flared”. Mariano also shared in “Fully Flared’s” Best Video win but his team Girl was edged by Habitat.
Habitat’s Silas Baxter-Neal and Stefan Janoski each won an award, leaving Dan Drehobl, Best Tranny winner, as the only skateboarder not from Habitat or Lakai to win an award (other than legend honoree Tony Hawk).
Mariano, who came out of retirement a few years ago, was a fan and pro favorite. Corey Duffel, who handed out the Best Street award, said Mariano was the “best skater in the world, for sure.” And he was only one of several presenters who let their feelings be known.
For his part, Mariano was truly touched by the huge sign of support.
“I’m older than most of you so I’m going to cry,” he said when accepting his first award (for Best Street).
His second trip to the podium, for Best Video Part, was more celeberatory. “I love everybody! I love skateboarding,” he yelled.
In his third and final solo trip to the podium to accept the TWS Readers’ Choice award he couldn’t think of much more to tell to the screaming crowd. “I don’t know what to say… I’ve already said everything.”
Mariano received an even larger ovation than TWS Legend winner Tony Hawk. Last year’s TWS Legend winner Lance Mountain introduced Hawk, whose acceptance speech was short and sweet.
“This has been an amazing ride and I can’t believe I still get to do this for a living,” he said. And for the younger skateboarders, he had the following advice: “Promote skateboarding the best way you can.”
While Mariano and Hawk’s acceptance speeches were more heartfelt, Janoski’s two trips to the podium were a bit more casual onstage.
After winning the Best Two Video Parts award, Janoski took his time to get to the stage and then let the audience know, “I’m available for all corporate sponsorships… energy drinks, razors, beer.”
Then when onstage alongside Baxter-Neal accepting Best Team for Habitat, he mused, “Well hopefully now Habitat won’t be broke like we are now.”
