Skateistan: Skate Culture In Kabul

Every single morning I wake up and get my news from three sources.  First I go to the Drudge Report for it’s hard-hitting journalism and its stance on politics.  Then I go over to Fox News, which is the home of some of my fair and balanced heroes, Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity.  Then I often go to CNN/Time Magazine just to see what they are doing over there.  What’s the best thing I found today?  Something really interesting actually.

So if you east coast skaters think you have it rough, just check out this new video Time has posted on their website.  Not often do we get to take a glimpse into a war torn country whose daily purpose is survival.  Not often do we get to meet the faces of those we only hear about in numbers on our mainstream media.  And it’s definitely not often are we fortunate enough to see skateboarding, especially in a place like Kabul in Afghanistan.  Well maybe I would be able to see all these things if I stopped listing to Fox.

Anyway Skateistan is a subculture of young people in Kabul who get away from it all (drugs, gangs, war) by skateboarding.  And as you probably know, Kabul has probably some of the most jagged, harsh, and unforgiving terrain in the entire world.  So they are forced to skate in an old swimming pool put there by the Soviets during the 80’s.  It’s pretty humbling to see this because as you can see, these kids despite what they wear or how they talk, are pretty similar to you.

Check out the video here.
