October 27, 2008 – 10:29 pm PT by Mike

It was a tough and very competitive day as those Damn Amateurs were let loose to duke it out in Costa Mesa for the 2008 Volcom Damn Am Skate Contest.  But it was David Loy who just edged out Cody Davis and Felipe of Brazil to take home the title of Damn Am.  David later celebrated his winnings by listening to the Damn It Feels Good To Be A Gangsta by the Geto Boys.

Now check out some of the coverage brought to you by First Stoke.  At first while watching David Loy’s part, I thought his run was in fast motion.  Nah, he’s just a speed skater.  That or he drank too much Kool Aide before his run.

October 27, 2008 – 10:28 pm PT by Mike

ride_snowboards.JPGI’m pretty sure that a good percentage of you kiddies out there who are sitting in class right now are not listening to your teacher.  About 25% of you are discreetly eating food that you bought during your snack period.  Id say 50% of you are probably texting you’re your bros about some fake story regarding some fly honey you were with this past weekend when in actuality you were babysitting your grandma.  And the rest of you are probably doodling some sick drawing you’ve been working on for about 30 minutes.

Well we’ve said it before to taggers and other artist around.  Get your stuff out there.  Ride Snowboards for the 7th year in a row is holding their annual Snowboard Art Contest.  Contestants from all over the globe partake in Ride’s exciting contest  for the chance to have their art displayed in a medium like none other.  On top of that, artist will also be competing for cash and prizes.

Get The 2009 Northwave Team DVD For Free

October 27, 2008 – 10:24 pm PT by Me

free_dvd.JPG

It’s not often that companies give away free swag and if they do, it requires you to attend their sometimes less than spectacular event or you must be some extraordinary standout of a citizen to win their free prize. If you’re too far to attend these special events, you don’t even bother because it’s not even worth your time unless the event is bodacious.  Or if it’s a competitive giveaway, your low self-esteem prohibits you to even try to compete for the prize.

Well the new Northwave DVD has no strings attached.  You can be any Joshmo and still get their 2009 DVD.  This is a lot better than the free stickers I got from the World Industries Menace stickers I received in 1995.  The video includes Pro Team Riders: Matt Beardmore, Patrick McCarthy, Hans Ahlund, Alexis Waite, Matty Ryan, Seth Huot, and more!

To reserve your free copy, email: intern02@northwave.com and write “Team DVD” in the subject area. Please include your full name, shipping address, and that you saw this ad on Lat34.

X Games Announces Equal Cash Prize For Men & Women

October 27, 2008 – 10:20 pm PT by Me

x_games_bmx.jpg

This country has come a long way since the days before Suffrage.  It was a depressed time when women in this country were not allowed to take part of one of this nation’s proudest privileges, voting.  Now look at where we are.  Opera Winfrey is one of the most powerful people in the country, Lisa Leslie from the LA Sparks dunked a basketball, and we might have a pig with lipstick in the White House.  What a landmark moment that might be.

Well in addition to all that, ESPN is proud to announce that the X Games and Winter X Games will feature equal prize money for both men and women in 2009. ESPN has been a leader in promoting and programming women’s athletics, and this recent action sports prize purse increase is the latest example. This past summer saw the X Games feature women’s motocross for the first time, and the upcoming Winter X Games will feature a host of female Olympic medalists from several different countries. Starting with Winter X Games 13 in January 2009, men and women athletes at all X Games events.

Mike Aitken Back in Salt Lake

October 27, 2008 – 12:14 am PT by Wina

BMX rider Mike Aitken is back in his home town of Salt Lake, but the news isn’t good, even though he was flown home by an air ambulance and admitted to a Trauma One hospital.

Aitken was seriously brain-damaged and partially paralyzed when he crashed while shooting a video in Pennsylvania on October 5. His sister, Carrie Peterson, is updating Mikey’s blog daily (http://www.mikeaitken.com/blog/) to keep everyone informed of his condition.

In a recent entry, she writes, “I hate to keep reiterating the seriousness of Mike’s condition, but there seems to be a lot of confusion surrounding his actual progress. There have been rumors that Mike is walking; unfortunately this is not the case. Mike is still struggling to show any movement on the right side of his body. Beyond this, Mike is still very limitedly conscious. Mike will begin a more rigorous rehabilitation program in SLC. Rehabilitation is aimed at attempting to help Mike recover as much brain function as possible. Whether that is the ability to talk, walk, eat, or even perform basic thought processes. At this point it is hard to say what functions Mike will be able to recover.”

He is somewhat combative, constantly struggling to get out of bed. But he is no longer on a ventilator, and the family no longer has the stress of having to visit him halfway across the country. And, more importantly, they have not given up hope that there will be greater recovery.

Carrie goes on to thank the Athlete Recovery Fund, a non-profit organization set up to help pay the horrendous expenses of injured action sports athletes, who are considered uninsurable by the insurance industry, and thus must compete without coverage in case of an accident. ARF paid for Mikey’s plane home, and is helping arrange benefits all over the country (to donate, go here: http://www.5050bmx.com/).

Now in SLC, Mikey has started physical therapy.  And there is some positive news.

“It has been an amazing morning full of high emotions,” the latest entry reads. “We arrived just in time for Mike’s morning rehab session. When we got to the rehab gym, Mike was asked how many people were in the room with him and he was able to answer. He was then asked to tell the therapist everyone’s names and he was able to give his sister’s and his mom’s name. It was as if Mike suddenly woke up this morning in that gym.”Meanwhile, some of the most moving writing on Mikey’s blog comes in the comments after for each post. One is from an obvious friend serving in Afghanistan, who writes, “Hey Bro, It kills me being so far away from home and not being able to hear the news of your progress every single day. As soon as you’re able I’m calling you up to tell you myself how proud I am of you. Watching you be a dad to Owen has made me so eager to be a father myself. I got some of the guys out here together for a picture to wish you well. They ask about your progress all the time.”

Format Change Coming in 2009 For Dream Tour

October 26, 2008 – 11:23 pm PT by Greg

slater_knox8122mundaka08kirstin_l.jpg

There’s a big change coming to the ASP’s World Tour next season as round 1 turns into an elimination round for selected events.

Currently, three surfers meet in round 1 with the bottom two meeting in round 2, where one is eliminated.  Winners of round 1 move straight to round 3 to meet the winner of round 2.

The new format, which is optional for events to adapt, will feature a man-on-man elimination round 1 with 32 surfers facing off in 16 heats.  The group will be made up of those rated 17-27 on the World Tour, six total wildcards and the top 15-rated WQS surfers.

The top 16 from the World Tour move straight to round two, where they will face off against the winners of round 1.

The decision was made by the ASP board in Australia, and was welcomed by Billabong, which has adopted the new format for its contest in Tahiti, South Africa, Spain and at Pipeline.

Quiksilver will keep the traditional format for the season-opening Gold Coast contest, while others are undecided at this time.

There will also be some seeding changes affecting how surfers requalify for the Dream Tour.

Former world champ C.J. Hobgood, for one, likes the change, saying it will result in “better waves for surfers, less days needed to run for the events, better waves and surfing for viewers.”

For more about the changes, along with comments from former world champ and current ASP President Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew, Mick Fanning and C.J. Hobgood, keep reading the release below.

Roxy to Release New Surf Film Summer 2009

October 26, 2008 – 2:27 am PT by Greg

Roxy has announced a partnership with surf filmmakers Tiffany Campbell and Andria Lessler to produce their new surf film, “Dear and Yonder” next summer.  The film’s goal is to promote the sport in “its purest form and natural light.”

The film will follow some of the sport’s top athletes, including Stephanie Gilmore, and Sofia Mulanovich and newcomers like Sally Fitzgibbons, Courteny Conlogue and Coco Ho as they surf their home breaks (aka Dear) and other spots around the world (aka Yonder).  There will also be a tip of the hat to the sport’s legends, including Linda Benson and Lisa Andersen.

Roxy and the filmmakers held a one-night benefit art show Saturday to help raise money for the film, which is being shot by renowned surf cinematographers Thomas Campbell, Scott Soens and Dave Homcy.

Buhl, Carter Take 48Straight Finals — And Trouble Ahead

October 26, 2008 – 1:19 am PT by Wina

It wouldn’t take a genius to predict who the woman’s winner of the 2008 48Straight mountain bike series would be. With a second and a first coming into the finals at San Luis Obispo, Melissa Buhl’s second place in the final event easily gave her the season title, plus a $5,000 cash prize and a new Jeep Grand Cherokee.

But it was the men’s race that was the stunner, just as it’s been during previous stops in New Jersey and Utah. Eric Carter got the season title, the cash and the car based on his overall results, though Brian Lopes won the day. The men’s races have been amazing all season. Leads by less than a wheel length. Finishes so close that judges had to scan and rescan photos of the runs.

Carter and Lopes, who 48Straight officials call “two of the most acclaimed racers in the history of the sport,” duked it out to the end. But Carter, who says he has tried for the title for six years, finally got the success he’s been dreaming of. “It’s funny because I didn’t feel so good on the course, and never really felt I had my rhythm, but I guess I was riding a lot faster than I thought because I had some good runs and knocked off some great competitors,” he said after his victory.

Those competitors would include Cody Warren and Greg Minnaar of South Africa, who won the stop in Utah by inches.

The total in prizes for each event and the overall titles comes to $100,000, the biggest purse in the sport. 48Straight has also been trying to grow its concept into something like the Dew Tour, but greener and with more music. Every event features sponsor booths like Paul Mitchell giving away product samples, and environmental booths giving away information. The series show shown phenomenal growth since changing to Jeep from the Honda Ski tour and adding summer events.

Some of the best and brightest in BMX descended upon Rochester, New York, Saturday to take part in the Halloween-themed Red Bull Trick or Treat contest.  More than 30 riders took part, though it was an unfamiliar face that came out on top.

Charlie “Monkey” Bowers dominated the field, taking full advantage of the course which included a tombstone wallride and a coffin-shaped box jump.

X Games Gold Medalist Garrett Reynolds landed in second place with Bruno Hoffman in third place.

BMX legend Kevin Robinson was a guest judge and liked what he saw in Bowers.

“Everyone out here rode amazing.” Robinson said. “Charlie put so much energy into every run he had, he just really stood out.”

For more about the contest, check out the official site and keep reading for the final results and official press release.
