Adam Jones celebrates his win. cr. AST

Adam Jones was the big winner Sunday at the PlayStation Pro, not only taking home the title for the individual contest, but also grabbing the Dew Cup and its $75K award. Jones’ biggest competition for the Dew Cup, Aussie Blake “Bilko” Williams (who won one event this season) did not compete as expected.

Robbie Maddison was close behind Jones in second place, both for the contest and for the Dew Cup, while Metal Mulisha rider Jeremy Lusk was third in both races.

FMX was only a contest event in three of the five AST Dew Tour stops this season, and Jones won this event and last month’s Toyota Challenge in Salt Lake City.

Nate Adams

Nate Adams’ reign at the top of the AST Dew Tour has ended after two season. Adams had a near-perfect season in 2007 after winning four-of-five events and took the 2006 season after Travis Pastrana basically gave it up midway through.

Adams started off the shortened 2008 season with a second-place finish in Baltimore’s Panasonic Open, but he was injured at the Toyota Challenge last month, finishing ninth. He’s been battling injury ever since and was eliminated from the Dew Cup race after finishing in ninth at the prelims and missing the finals.

Jeremy Lusk took the top spot in the prelims on Thursday, followed by Beau Bamburg, Jeff Kargola and Mike Mason. They will join Adam Jones and Robbie Maddison in the finals on Sunday.

Aussie Blake “Bilko” Williams is ranked second in the Dew Cup race and has an automatic entry into the finals but is expected to miss the contest thanks to an injury he suffered last month at X Games Mexico.

Bilko’s absence all but assures Adam Jones of his first Dew Cup win (and the $75K bonus that comes with it). Jones needs to finish in the top three to secure the Cup, and that’s looking pretty likely.

The FMX finals will take place on Sunday from 12-2:00 p.m. and will also be broadcast live on Spike TV.

Here’s the lineup for Sunday’s final (in order)

7. Mike Mason
6. Jeff Kargola
5. Beau Bamburg
4. Jeremy Lusk
3. Robbie Maddison
2. Blake Williams (injured)

For the first time ever, FMX fans will be able to catch an AST Dew Tour event live on Spike TV. This weekend’s PlayStation Pro FMX finals will be airing on Sunday, Oct. 19 from 12:30-2 p.m. ET. It’s all thanks to the corporate synergy that comes from MTV buying the AST earlier this year (MTV Networks owns Spike).

Normally NBC Sports airs five of the six contests that make up each AST Dew Tour stop, with FMX being one of the more popular. Last season, one of the FMX contests was also webcast live.

This year, everything changed with FMX — the tour announced that the event would be cut from two of the five stops (with Demos filling the gaps). Blake Williams won the first stop in Baltimore in June, while Adam Jones won in Salt Lake City last month.

Jones leads the overall AST Dew Cup race with Williams a close second. However, Williams was injured at the X Games Mexico contest last month and is expected to miss the final stop in Orlando — but these moto riders are pretty resilient, so anything’s possible.

For more about the AST Dew Tour, you can check out the official site. Or keep an eye on us for the latest results.

Stenberg’s win was impressive given the lingering injuries he’s battled this season, but it did come without two key competitors, Blake Williams and Nate Adams, who missed the event due to injury.

The win was even better for Twitch since it came on his 27th birthday.

“I came out and got first place. It’s what I do. And, I gave myself a great birthday present,” Twitch said after the contest.

For the win, Twitch took home $30K, Bamberg $20K and Jones $10K.

Twitch Repeats as LG World Champion of Freestyle Motocross!
An Event Favorite is Stunned in the Semi-Final Round

LOS ANGELES (September 27, 2008) — More than 12,000 fans witnessed a night of sky-scraping performances at the 6th annual LG World Championships of Freestyle Motocross produced by ASA Entertainment rocked Fairplex Pomona tonight at the L.A. County Fair. After opening musical acts that included headlining band FILTER played on the Maxell music stage, Jeremy “Twitch” Stenberg (Santee, California) outshined his fellow competitors for the second consecutive year to capture the title of 2008 LG World Champion of Freestyle Motocross and $30,000.

With only four days to practice after recovering from recent hand surgery, Twitch flipped his way to the title with the confidence and skill for which he is known. This win was particularly special as it came at what he terms his “favorite event” and happened on his birthday.

“It is what it is,” Twitch stated when asked for comments about his win. “I came out and got first place. It’s what I do. And, I gave myself a great birthday present.”

When asked if he would be back next year, he remarked, “This year I got the repeat, next year I’m going for the three-peat!”

It was clear that Stenberg’s skill level exceeded his challengers, as he was the only athlete in the competition to perform three back-flip variations in succession and never repeat a trick during a run. His tricks were innovative, death-defying and technically extraordinary, leaving no question as to the world’s best freestyle athlete.

Oregon’s Beau Bamberg (Gresham) captured the $20,000 second-place prize with an assured performance that displayed his potential and finally exhibited his skill level, something that has been lacking since he suffered a serious injury to the triangular wall of his abdomen two months ago while preparing for a competition.

“This feels great,” said Bamberg. “The last couple of months I have not been able to ride up to my potential due to my injury. Today was the first day that I’ve felt really good and was able to perform like I know I’m can.”

Bamberg’s ability was enough to upset 2008 X Games Los Angeles and X Games Mexico champion Jeremy Lusk (San Diego, California) in the semi-final round. With his recent success, Lusk entered the competition as the favorite in many opinions. However, Bamberg executed a run that left judges in extended deliberation about who was the heat winner. When the final points were tallied, Bamberg advanced to the final round, less than a mere point ahead of Lusk.

The evening’s head judge, Regis Harrington, explained the decision to a surprised audience. “That was one of the closest rounds I’ve ever seen, so it was difficult. However, Bamberg did different tricks throughout his entire run, and Lusk repeated two tricks. In a competition this tight you just cannot do that.”

The event’s third place performance came from Adam Jones of Warrendale, Pennsylvania. Jones won $10,000.

Five men earned the opportunity to compete alongside the world’s best for the LG World Championship of Freestyle Motocross title with successful performances in the open qualifying round earlier in the day. These men are; Ronnie Faisst (Mays Landing, New Jersey), Cameron Sinclair (Langwarren, Victoria Australia), Dustin Miller (Garnerville, Nevada), Jeff Kargola (San Clemente, California) and local hometown favorite Wiley Fullmer (Chino, California). They all turned in solid first round performances but were prevented from advancing by the world’s top pros this season.

All of the LG World Championships of Freestyle Motocross action will air on CBS Sports, Sunday, December 7th following the local NFL broadcast, as well as on cable networks to be announced. Please check your local listings for more details.

Yes, the AST Dew Tour still has FMX and while a couple of major names missed the Toyota Challenge Saturday in Salt Lake City, the field left still represented most of the top riders in the sport. Nate Adams and Blake “Bilko” Williams, who battled for first in Baltimore at the Panasonic Open, both had problems during their first runs. Adams fell during a lazy boy backflip and was knocked out of the competition with two broken fingers. Williams, who broke his ankles last year in Baltimore, was injured after crashing in practice on Friday and rode hurt. He was unable to have a clean run and was obviously in pain after it finished.

That opened the door for the rest of the field, though former X Games gold medalist Adam Jones has proven his skill before and did it again scoring a 94.17 on his first run. Robbie Maddison finished in second with a 92.13, followed by Metal Mulisha rider Jeremy Lusk in third with a 91.59.

Williams did come out for his second run but didn’t score high enough to break the top five, even though he landed three 360 variations.
