Life changing opportunities that come around in our lifetimes are far and few between. Maybe you should have been that bellybutton ring MODEL when you were approached by a world famous photographer who wanted to use your stomach when he saw you at Raging Waters. Or perhaps you did have a niche for singing when your grandmother suggested you should enter the hit show American Idol because she thought you would go far. These opportunities come and go and I’m willing to bet that these breaks pass us by since we’re too pessimistic to take them on.

The visionary individuals who dared to take on something different usually reap the benefits. When squirrel shooting KARL MALONE from the Utah Jazz accepted a pay cut in order to win a championship with Shaq and Kobe came his way, he took it. Unfortunately they didn’t win but they came close. And back to American Idol, when WILLIAM HUNG skipped out on engineering classes to become a star, his time and dedication definitely paid off. He brought new life to a forgotten RICKY MARTIN classic.

The same can be said about Julian Wilson and his bold and daring move to forego next years WQS. But this is no shot in the dark. Julian was given the opportunity to star in a film with non other than the Irons brothers. We’re not talking about chopped liver here, we’re talking filet minon. Suring with two living legends while getting paid for something that will forever live in surfing movie history, why not? Although they will have some tough competition. I heard that Point Break 2 will be coming out around the same time. Good luck guys! Check out the press release at THEDAILY.COM

Irons, 30, is a three-time ASP World Champion and is definitely one of the top surfers of all time, but something’s been off recently and Irons opens up about that, his brother’s retirement from competitive surfing and just about everything else in a new Surfline interview.

Here are a few highlights, but do yourself a favor and read the whole thing.

SURFLINE: Why did you no-show for your heat in France?
ANDY IRONS: It was a decision I made after the first heat I paddled out in, the day before, and made a complete fool out of myself. I just wasn’t into it, and I felt like I was going to have a crazy meltdown if I stayed and tried to fake it any longer. It’s hard to explain, but it goes all the way back to J-Bay, where I was freezing cold, miserable, and I truly wanted to lose that heat to Granger [Larsen], and just get the hell out of there. I even gave him a wave hoping he would get the score. Ever since then, it’s like every time I put a jersey on I am slamming my head into a brick wall, and causing myself even more problems with my sponsors, fans, judges, and all these internet bloggers or whatever you call ’em. What people don’t understand is that I am just as confused as they are.

Are you going to the next ASP event, in Brazil?
No Brazil for me! I am in California right now just trying to get my mind right, and taking a break from surfing all together. Been going out to dinner, movies, and I even started working with a trainer. I had a meeting with Billabong the other day, and they are being super cool about this whole deal. They have seen me struggle, and knew from J-Bay that I have been close to jumping off a building at every event since then. They actually gave me the option to skip Europe all together, but I couldn’t wrap my head around skipping an event I have had so much success at [The Quiksilver Pro France]. So, I went, and was right back at LAX within like 4 or 5 days I think. Pretty heavy few days. Sorry Lyndie!

Any plans yet for the 2009 ASP season?
I don’t know. Is there such thing as having a plan with no plans at all?

Has your brother’s decision to retire from full-time ASP competition affected your perspective on the tour?
Everyone keeps asking me that. I started off saying no, but thinking about getting stuck somewhere like Bells while Bruce is getting perfect waves somewhere is going to drive me crazy. So I guess yeah… It has affected me.

The Billabong Pro Mundaka is expected to kick off today in Spain and Kelly Slater only needs to make it to the fourth round to secure his record ninth world title. It was only two years ago that Slater captured his eighth title at the very same venue after losing in the final heat to Bobby Martinez.

However, when the first round kicks off a few notable names will be missing and won’t be able to watch Slater’s inevitable march into history.

Defending world champion Mick Fanning is returning to Coolangatta, Australia, to rest after suffering a groin injury in South Africa at the J-Bay contest last July. The injury is expected to keep him sidelined through the Hang Loose contest in late October.

Also missing the event due to injury are Dean Morrison and Neco Padaratz.

Andy and Bruce Irons will also be skipping the event, though they are chalking it up to “personal reasons.” Bruce, who won the Rip Curl Pro Search contest in August, is retiring from the ASP World Tour this season and three-time world champ Andy is having an off-year, ranked 13th overall on the tour. Andy also skipped out on his second-round heat last month at the Quiksilver Pro France.

Find out more about the contest at the official site.

Two days of action have come and gone for the Quiksilver Pro France and several big names have bowed out already. Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson, Andy Irons, Bruce Irons and Tim Reyes all were eliminated in the second round, while Kelly Slater, Taj Burrow, Bede Durbidge and Dane Reynolds remain to surf another day.

There will be a lay day on Monday with surfing planned to resume Tuesday. Slater can wrap up his record ninth record world title if a number of conditions are met. If Slater wins the event, Burrow and Durbidge need to miss the semis for the title to be his. It’s a tall order, and if he doesn’t win it this week, his next chance will come soon in Spain at the Billabong Pro Mundaka — the place where he won his eight title.

The Rip Curl Pro Search kicked off today in Indonesia and it didn’t take long for the usual suspects to dominate the first round. Kelly Slater scored two huge waves in his heat, including a perfect 10, while Bruce and Andy Irons were close behind with top waves of a 9.77 and 9.73.

The great 6-foot+ waves allowed for some tough competiton to move ahead to round three. In one head, Joel Parkinson edged wildcard Bruno Santos, 18.40 to 18.03. Santos’ score was otherwise a top-five score for the day.

The 11th heat featured Chris Ward, Ben Bourgeios and Adrian Buchan facing off and barely a point seperated the three. Ward got the pass through to Round three with a 17.03, while Bourgeios and Buchan will move to Round Two and fight for survival.

There are a number of familiar faces in the second round, including Taj Burrow (who will face off against local wildcard Komang Goga Suijaya), Bede Durbidge and Bobby Martinez, who may have the toughest job of all as he has to face off against Santos, who won the Billabong Pro Teahupoo in May.

Andy Irons Makes Early Exit from the Globe Pro Fiji
TAVARUA, Fiji (Tuesday, May 27, 2008) – Three-time ASP World Champion Andy Irons (HAW) was the first big seed to fall in the fourth event of 11 on the 2008 ASP World Tour. The current World No. 4 was eliminated by fellow Hawaiian Fred Patacchia in Round 3 of the Globe Pro Fiji today.

“It’s always a confidence boost to take out one of the Top 5 guys,” Patacchia said. “Andy is a three-time world champion and one of the greatest contest surfers in the world. I’m hoping that since I did take him out, I go at least as far as he would have gone it’s always a bummer to get taken out by a guy who loses in the next round.”

Patacchia finished World No. 14 and claimed ASP Rookie of the Year honors in 2005, but almost didn’t requalify for the Dream Tour at the end of 2007 and has had a slow start to 2008. He pulled out of Snapper Rocks, Australia, finished equal 17th in Bells Beach, Australia and came last at Teahupoo, Tahiti last week.

“Missing the first event at Snapper was a bummer for me, I was injured,” Patacchia said. “It gives you a slow start to the year it gives you a bad seed and you end up going up against high seeds for the rest of the year. Finally breaking through that 17th and 33rd result area is always nice. At least I’m going to get a ninth. I won’t be really happy with that though. I’m looking to go further and hopefully win my first ASP World Tour event.”

Reigning ASP World Champion Mick Fanning (AUS) is looking to post his first win of the year and is on the right track after posting the highest heat total of the day – 16.90 out of 20.00. He earned a near perfect 9.97 in his heat against Kieren Perrow (AUS) when he came out of one of the few barrels on offer at Cloudbreak this afternoon.

“They jipped me that .03,” Fanning said. “No, I’m joking. It was a really slow heat actually. There weren’t many scores until right there at the end. I’m just lucky the last 10 minutes went really well for me. I got a couple of sixes and then finished off with a really good one.”

Heat 8 of Round 3 was a nostalgic one for former ASP World Champions Kelly Slater (USA) and Mark Occhilupo (AUS). Occhilupo retired last year, but was surfing in the 2008 Globe Pro Fiji as a wildcard.

“It’s nice sufing against Oc,” Slater said. “This is probably his last event out here at Tavarua so part of you wants him to go further and win the event, but not when he’s in your bracket. I think I was a little off that heat because I was caught up in the moment surfing against him in one of his last events and thinking about that more than what I actually needed to do out there.”

Occhilupo lost to Slater in a slow heat after giving up priority and handing his opponent an opportunity to improve his lead.

“It was a struggle,” Slater said. “I started off good with a 7.3 but then it got really slow. At the end of the heat, he paddled for one and lost priority and then I took off on it for some reason and gave him priority back. Then a set came and he had his choice – he took the first one and the second one was better.”

Slater will meet defending Globe Pro Fiji champion Damien Hobgood (USA) in Round 4 now. Hobgood beat Ben Dunn (AUS) with a 9.17 and a 6.50. Hobgood didn’t surf the last event on tour due to a hurt shoulder.

“I was super stoked with that heat,” Hobgood said. “After you come off injury you always want to get a win to get the monkey off your back. I definitely felt kind of tight on the first couple of waves so I was trying to get the flow back. I was really stoked that I was able to build on every wave and loosen up and get more in a rhythm for my next heat.”

Hobgood received a bye into Round 3 after Luke Munro (AUS) hurt his knee and pulled out yesterday, so the two-time winner of the Globe Pro Fiji was excited that he was able to get back out there today.

“Obviously Luke pulling out helped because I made my heat,” Hobgood said. “But for me, not having surfed for awhile, I’d rather surf some heats to get a little rhythm and a little momentum going. That is why I was really stoked with that heat.”

Brazil’s Adriano de Souza made his heat over Michael Campbell (AUS) today and was very pleased to assure another equal 9th or better finish.

“I feel so good,” de Souza said. “I have never started the year like this before. I’m really happy to have worked so hard and now see results pay off. I have Freddy P. next. He is a giant out at Cloudbreak, he knows the spot. It’s going to be exciting and I will use all my tools to get through the heat.”

Event officials predict that it might be a few days before the final day of Globe Pro Fiji action runs but an official call will be made tomorrow morning at 7am.

The day after defending world champ Mick Fanning was knocked out of the Billabong Pro Tahiti a slew of other top surfers were shown the exit as wildcards dominated the day.

Wildcard Manoa Drollet (above) knocked out Slater in Round three today while Taj Burrow fell to Brazilian Bruno Santos but other top surfers did advance including Andy Irons, Joel Parkinson and CJ Hobgood.

Conditions are good in Tahiti and contest organizers hope to finish up the action on Thursday. You can catch the live webcast on the official site and read more about Wednesday’s action in the press release below..

Wildcards Leave Slater and Burrow in their Wake in Round 3

TEAHUPOO, Tahiti (Wednesday, May 14, 2008) –Eight-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) and last year’s World No. 2 Taj Burrow (AUS) were Round 3 casualties to Billabong Pro Tahiti wildcards today.

Bruno Santos (BRA), who eliminated reigning World Champion Mick Fanning (AUS) in a tight heat yesterday, beat Burrow in a much more convincing fashion today when he earned an early 8.33 to take a lead he never relinquished.

“It’s so good to surf against the best surfers and beat the guys,” Santos said. “This heat was so different than my heat yesterday. I got a big score at the beginning, got priority and then I got another big score, a 9.27, so I am really happy. Hopefully I can keep going, I really want to make the final.”

Local surfer Manoa Drollet (PYF), who won his Round 1 heat over Slater and C.J. Hobgood yesterday, beat the World No. 1 with a 14.00 heat total despite Slater catching the best wave of the heat, a 9.83, in the dying minutes of the heat.

“To beat Kelly Slater is pretty much as good as it gets but to win the contest would be even better,” Drollet said. “I got lucky, again like in the first round, when I got the best wave right at the beginning. I was in the lead and I was more relaxed and there weren’t many waves at the end of the heat, so he couldn’t do anything.”

Slater was handed a priority interference penalty for paddling for a wave Drollet wanted and had priority on so his second scoring ride wasn’t counted. Even if it had, Slater would have come up short 13.26 to Drollet’s 14.00.

“I paddled probably one paddle too much,” Slater said of the interference. “I sort of judged it like Manoa wasn’t going to catch it and I paddled a little more than I obviously would have and then it was too late. That’s the way it goes, I made a little mistake and out here at Teahupoo the chances of coming back from an interference are almost nil.”

Slater will retain his No. 1 rating after the Billabong Pro Tahiti despite his equal 17th finish today. His closest threats still in the competition are Andy Irons (HAW) and Joel Parkinson (AUS), both of whom are rated 6th in the world right now. Should one of them win the event, they would move to World No. 2 behind Slater.

“We’ll see what happens,” Slater said. “Taj went down and Mick went down so that’s good for me if I’m going to look at the whole year,” Slater said. “It gives Andy and Parko a chance to catch up but the best one of them can do is a 5th I think, because they’re going to knock each other out. Then there’s Bede we’ll see how Bede goes. This isn’t his strong wave, but he could get a good result.”
Durbidge, who came into the event World No. 2, didn’t get a strong result and was knocked by an in form Chris Ward (USA) in the second to last heat of the day. Ward earned one of three perfect 10s awarded today, but was the only surfer earning one to advance. Tiago Pires (PRT) earned a 10.00 but lost his heat to Parkinson on an interference mistake and Leonardo Neves (BRA) needed more than a 10.00 and a 6.90 to beat Bruce Irons’ (HAW) 18.33 in Round 2.

C.J. Hobgood, the 2004 winner of the Billabong Pro laid claim to the highest heat score of the event moments after watching Ward blitz – he posted a 9.97 and a 9.67 for a 19.64 heat total in the last heat of the day.

“Wardo pretty much laid the groundwork for that,” Hobgood said. “I was just watching him. What do you do when the waves are cooking? More times than not when you are out here right before dark you get this little window and I was just hoping the waves would turn on and they did.”

ASP Rookies Dane Reynolds (USA) and Jordy Smith (ZAF) went head to head in Heat 3 of Round 3. Reynolds, who is the highest rated rookie on tour at equal 11th, got the better of the exchange and is through to Round 4.

“When I saw that I had Jordy I was like, ‘Oh, no,’ I was so nervous just because of all the hype surrounding us,” Reynolds said. “I didn’t really care who won, I just didn’t want to get smoked and be all embarrassed. I’m stoked I won that one, I’m sure there will be plenty of matchups, probably at JBay and then I’m sure it will be the other way around, so it will be fun.”

There are 18 heats of Billabong Pro Tahiti action remaining and contest officials are hoping to finish the competition by 4pm local time tomorrow. An official call will be made at 6am.
