Well BoilTheOcean just released their Top 10 skate parts of the year. I would really have to agree with their number one slot but I’ve been diggin the Billy Marks and Chris Cole parts in Ride The Sky. Those were just nasty.

Check out the list over at boiltheocean.com/

The etnies GvR contest is always one of the best to watch and this year’s was no different thanks to a thrilling final that actually resulted in a tie, meaning the two teams would have to face off in a Game of SKATE.

The Regulars’ Chris Cole and Andrew Langi went head-to-head with Goofys Tyler Hendley and Justin Figueroa and the contest was decided when Cole landed a backside ollie 360 down the double set.

Cole was named MVP for the Regulars, earning a $17K payday, while Justin Figueroa was named MVP for the Goofy team.

There was also a best trick contest and a ladies jam and for those results, keep on reading.

REGULAR TEAM WINS FIFTH ANNUAL ETNIES GVR BREAKING THE TIE!
Closest GvR Ever Ended in Overtime with a Game of SKATE between Regular and Goofy Skaters

Lake Forest, Calif. (Oct. 5, 2008) – The Regular Team took home bragging rights, and a 3-2 lead with their win in today’s fifth annual etnies GvR, while the Goofy Team will have to wait for another chance to redeem their stance. At the close of the standard etnies GvR Finals the scores of the Regular and Goofy Teams were within 25 points, which according to the rules is considered a tie, so the event went into an overtime Game of SKATE.

Regular Team Capitan Mark Whiteley selected Chris Cole and Andrew Langi to represent his team in the tie breaking Game of SKATE. Dave Swift, Goofy Team Capitan, selected Tyler Hendley and Justin Figueroa to represent his stance on the double set and hubbas in the etnies Skatepark.

The final debate in the 2008 etnies GvR was incredibly close. After Regular Footers Chris Cole and Andrew Langi went back and forth in the Game of SKATE with Goofy Footed Tyler Hendley and Justin Figueroa many times the winner of the debate was still undecided. Team Goofy had SKAT and the Regular footers had SKA until Chris Cole led the Regular Team to victory with a backside ollie 360 down the double set.

Upon its inception in 2004, GvR provided skateboarding a forum for the first team-based event in the industry, and annually features top pros divided into teams based on stance to determine who comes out on top in this skate debate. More than 20,000 people attended the fifth etnies GvR skate contest this weekend.

What a great way to develop foreign relationships with one of the world’s biggest super powers in the world by going over there with one of the United States best skate teams and putting on a good show. It shows a lot that George W. Bush really cares about our standing on the international stage and how the rest of the world perceives us. First there was the New York Philharmonic playing in North Korea, now this: Fallen in Moscow. What a great headline.

Well the Fallen team have been pushing their new skate video “Ride The Sky” now after being viewed by some “Best Skate Video Of The Year” and t goes back to “pure skating”. I wonder what that means? But with that success, the Fallen team wanted to take it overseas and to include it on their video tour. So with that, Moscow was part of their itinerary and they have also documented some of it in a nice little video seen here. Check it! And also make sure you watch it till the end to experience some traditional Russian Folk Dancing.

Ryan Sheckler made history when he won the gold medal at X Games 9 in 2003. He was 13 years old remains the youngest gold medalist ever. Now he’s back on top after winning the Skate Street competition on Friday in Los Angeles over Paul Rodriguez and Greg Lutzka.

P-Rod has been on fire lately, with wins at the the Maloof Money Cup and AST Dew Tour’s Right Guard Open. It was at the RGO that Sheckler reinjured his broken arm and fell out of the top 6 of an AST contest for the first time in his career.

Sheckler ruled two of the three jam sessions, stumbling slightly in the final stair obstacle, where Chris Cole (fourth) and P-Rod dominated. But in the end Sheckler’s overall 92.00 would give him the honor.

Check out more about the win below plus full results.

Ryan Sheckler Dominates: Has Best Contest of His Life

“The fans make me skate better.” – Sheckler

LOS ANGELES- It was a hot day on top of the Event Deck at L.A. Live this afternoon as Sheckler, Cole, Paul Rodriguez and Greg Lutzka battled it out for one of the coveted podium positions in the Skateboard Street Men’s Final. In the end it was Sheckler who proved that he’s not only just a pretty face on T.V., but that he is also the best.

“This is the best contest I’ve ever won, the best I’ve ever felt, and the hardest I’ve ever skated.” he said with a smile.

Sheckler’s first heat, in which he earned himself a 94.00 (the highest score of the day), started off with a 180-kickflip off the 15-foot-high subway roof. He continued to one up himself a couple minutes later when he again impressed the crowd with a 360 kickflip off the roof. It was during the second heat though, that he got the crowd and his fellow skaters buzzing with excitement when he landed a caballero kickflip over the China gap.

Back in 2003 Sheckler was the youngest gold medalist in history, a title he still holds. Now, just barely an adult at age 18, Sheckler has regained the title of Skateboard Street champion.

“I’m in shock right now. I’ve been waiting since I was 13 to get back to the podium. I’m just at a loss for words,” he said.

Sheckler wasn’t going to clinch the gold without a fight from fellow skaters Paul Rodriguez, Greg Lutzka and Chris Cole. Cole was in the hot seat going into this competition as he was in the running for the first ever three-peat in Skateboard Street Men’s history. Although he was unable to put together enough of a run to reach the podium, he still finished in a respectable fourth place.

Both Rodriguez and Lutzka stayed on Sheckler’s heels throughout the three-heat final with consistent, big and technical tricks including Lutzka’s frontside frontflip off the roof of the subway station that helped earn him his bronze medal.

Silver medalist Rodriquez knew it would take a lot to compete against the stacked field today.

“Last year I gave up on my self before I even started the X Games. I came into this competition just super positive and told myself to go for it, and that’s what I did,” he stated.

The Men’s Skateboard action is just getting started. Check back tomorrow at 5:45 p.m. PT for the Men’s Skateboard Vert Final.

This year’s finals will only have six skateboarders, unlike last year’s field of 10, so that meant some big names missed the cut, most notably Nyjah Huston, who placed seventh. Check out the full results below.

There were 540s and 720s galore on Sunday afternoon in Orange County as ten of the top vert skaters in the world battled for the Carl’s Jr. US Men’s Pro Vert title and a $75K first-place payout at the Maloof Money Cup in Costa Mesa, CA. When it was all said and done, Pierre-Luc Gagnon took the top spot spot (repeating his prelim standing), followed by Shaun White and Bucky Lasek.

For his win PLG not only went home with the $75K, but also a new Ford Flex ($25K value) and a $10K Nixon watch. For second, White received $35K and Lasek $20K for third.

The finals on Sunday were broken into two heats, each featuring the skaters getting two runs in order, followed by a 35 minute jam session. The jam format certainly kept things going fast, with some crazy tricks being landed including Bucky Lasek’s 720 Indy Nosebone, Danny Mayer’s kickflip mctwist and Sandro Dias’ nar jar 540. Dias wasted most of his jam session trying to land the 900, basically ensuring he wasn’t going to end up in the running for the top prize. However, he did manage to land it with less than a minute left in the session. While the jam led to a few close calls, there were also led to more than a few close calls as everyone tried to get in as many runs as possible. White did deliver in the format after strong individual runs with mutlple spin-filled runs but PLG’s lead was too strong to overcome.

Going through the first four zones, it was the Chris Cole and Nyjah Huston show, with the 13-year-old definitely coming into his own this year. Paul Rodriguez, the to top qualifier, was third.

After the 16-stair, which actually counted for half of the final score, the final lineup shifted with P-Rod killing the obstacle, followed by Huston and Cole. It was a debatable end to a huge contest and P-Rod’s $100K payout is the largest ever in a skateboarding competition.

“I thought this guy had it for sure,” Rodriguez said of Huston after being named winner. “I still don’t know if I earned it.”

Fan-favorite Ryan Sheckler ended up in fourth and said, “That was the most insane skateboarding contest ever,” before congratulating Huston on killing it — not mentioning his Plan B teammate P-Rod.

For the ladies, Lacey Baker came through big in the five-woman finals taking first place for Street and winning $25K and a $10K Nixon watch.

For those who didn’t catch the action in person or via the live webcast (with its announcements of lost kids and the like) the action will be replayed in all its glory on July 20 on CBS at 12 noon / 3 p.m. PT.
