There are quite a few skateboard movies from the past that have had the kind of anticipation Lakai’s “Fully Flared” had in the skateboard industry. In my day, I remember when Plan B’s “Questionable Video” came out. I think that video automatically changed skateboarding and skateboard movies forever. Then there was my all time favorite, “The Skateboard Kid II” starring Willy Manoloto Santos with his groundbreaking performance. Now we have the Lakai Video. I think I can speak for everyone on this entire earth who have seen it. That damn thing was incredible. Whether you liked the slow mo or not, the skating was insane.

For you tech geeks and filmmaker posers, this series of Epicly Later’d should capture your attention. With Lakai’s “Final Flared” just over the horizon, with extra features for days, you will enjoy just a tease of what you can expect from the Deluxe Edition of “Final Flared”. Here are a few words from Patrick O’Dell.

Lakai’s Fully Flared was probably the most anticipated skate video of all time. From Mike Mo and Alex Olson to Mike Carroll and Guy Mariano—from Lucas Puig to Anthony Pappalardo, Fully Flared has something to offer everybody. Not to mention that the hype was out of this world. So for the first few parts we’re going to dip into the history of the Lakai video, and as we go we’re going to release some history episodes on Mike Carroll, Guy Mariano, and others… I promise it will be sweet.

We’re nearing the end of an epic series of Gino Iannucci’s segment on Epicly Later’d. I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed a VBS series so much. This one will definitely be hard to top. Luckily there are plenty of great skaters out there with even greater stories so I wouldn’t be surprised if Patrick O’Dell keeps the heat going.

In this 9th episode of Epicly Later’d, we get to hear what Gino thought of his part in Nike’s anticipated video “Nothing But The Truth”. Guy explains how his part was so highly anticipated that it was probably one of the biggest cheers for a skate part he’s ever experienced. And that’s coming from Guy Mariano. Check it.

It’s rare for an individual to have style and substance. Sure many people have great style in what they do. Look at the example of Fabio. That guy is all style but just listen to him. Not to mock his accent or anything, which I think is pretty cool, but he’s so not intelligent. Plus he gets hit in the face with birds. So not cool. Then you have the example of Blues Traveler, a band with no style but a great sound. They came out with probably one of the most memorable songs of the 90’s. Too bad they never made it to Carson Daly’s “Total Request Live”.

Now Gino Iannucci, that’s something special. He is an individual with not only substance in his skating, but he has one of the most extraordinary styles ever. And this 8th episode of Epicly Later’d starring Gino shares this with us. Not to mention a skate tour of Italy that he and a bunch of other Italiano Americans took to immerse themselves in culture and heritage.

On the topic of sick styles, I think other notable people in skating (for me anyway) are Guy Mariano, Tom Penny, Quim Cardona, Paulo Diaz, and Arlo Eisenberg.

If you were like me, and I many of you are, then you probably had a lot of questions after seeing Lakai’s “Fully Flared”. The skate movie had so many different elements of mystical surprise and wonderment. My mind was going through a flurry of amazement I think I got overwhelmed with curiosity. For example:

1. When Mike Mo got slapped in the face with a birthday cake at the beginning of his epic part, what flavor was that cake? It looked so delicious.
2. When Ty Evans’ lens got broken off due to a bail out, did he wisely keep his receipt in case such an unimaginable event took place?
3. Now that the world knows of Eric Koston’s supernatural abilities (shooting lasers out of his mouth and eyes) did his success in skateboarding have anything to do with him being part droid?

Well after the Transworld Skateboarding Awards, Transworld was smart enough to put the Lakai team in a room together to answer some questions. What Transworld wasn’t smart enough for was to ask the hard-hitting questions, like the ones mentioned above. Regardless it’s a really interesting interview. Check it!

Remember the first time you saw the A-Team? I forgot exactly but I think that skate team consisted of Rodney Mullen, Gershon Mosley, Marc Johnson, and Chett Thomas. Something like that. But I remember when that skate team was somehow concocted, I believe that they raised the bar on exclusivity. Like you had to be super dope to belong there. You can even look at other sports teams to see that kind of superpower. Look at the ’04 Lakers with Malone and Payton, the present New York Yankees, or even the cast of the Jerry Bruckheimer film Armageddon. There’s no way this could fail.

Now we’re not talking about earmuff here. Neff Headwear has put together a new skate team to represent their brand of hats and they look like they mean business too. This isn’t a team you want to mess around with. With Eric Koston, Brian Szafranski, Guy Mariano, and Terry Kennedy rolling with Neff gear, this looks to be a pretty exclusive team. Despite the fact that their snowboard team has nearly 100 riders. This is the first time i’ve ever seen the brand and just by looking at the riders alone, i think i’m sold. Just how I was sold on the movie Armageddon because it had such a star studded cast. There’s no way Neff could fail. Go check out the Neff Website and start buying. It looks like streetwear is still alive and strong… I hope.

Do you remember back in 2004 I think it was when George Lucas re-released episodes four, five and six of the Star Wars trilogy? It marked the very first time the world would see the “Star Wars” trilogy the way it was meant to be seen. First of all the films went through an extensive digital clean up in high definition so that meant the blue screen scenes were flawless. The sound effects were digitally re-mastered with updated sound effects and design. And of course my favorite, the replacing of Sebastian Shaw with Hayden Christiansen at the end of “Revenge Of The Jedi”. How respectful that was.

Well nearly on the same level as “Star Wars”, The Lakai team will be re-releasing “Fully Flared” Deluxe Edition; this was the way it was meant to be seen. The massive 3-DVD box set includes 1 HD-Blu-Ray disc, 2 SD DVD discs, photo gallery, unused footage, alternate edits, a top secret film, and best of all, a 60 minute behind the scenes documentary. Hopefully this will go through the steps of shooting the most insane opening to any skate film in the history of skating.

This will definitely be something special and I’m sure will raise the bar for skate movies. Check out the teaser over at Skate Fairy.

The Avalon is one of the shiniest shiny shirt club venues in all of Los Angeles. If you’re uncertain of what a shiny shirt club is, it is a venue where they play the jiggiest of all jiggy music, the drinks cost around $10 for a beer, the girls look like $2 hookers, and the guys wear their hair slick and shiny, and the only thing glistening even more are their clubbing shirts. Hence “Shiny Shirt Club”.

Well for two nights out of the year, The Avalon gets a major transformation. One night they host the Transworld Skateboarding Awards, and the other night is reserved for the Hollywood DMV’s Christmas party. A few of us here at Lat34 were fortunate enough to attend the annual event but to our dismay, we weren’t allowed to take video inside.

So check out some of the red carpet footage below and Transworld will probably provide some of debauchery that took place inside in the coming weeks.
