For all of yous guys who had any questions regarding Lakai’s “Fully Flared” opening sequence should really learn a lot from this 3rd episode of Epicly Later’d. There’s a part in there where Spike Jonze is being interviewed in regards to the explosions and how they went off a bit early. He denies that he did that on purpose. I don’t believe him for a second. I know, and he knows, and many of you know that the shot is more dramatic with debris flying in their faces. But this is the stuff that makes me say, “God bless the Internet”.

I know that we probably don’t cover enough women events or stories here on Lat and I know that there’s probably a lack of female coverage in the media in general. Or I should say that there’s not enough coverage on respectable women in the media.

You’re probably saying to yourself right now, “Of course there is media coverage on women”. You’re right. But what do you have? Pamela Anderson’s show? Mother of “missing tot” Casey Anthony? Or election coverage of Republican’t VP nominee Sarah Palin? I know that there is good coverage out there, somewhere, but you can’t deny that the media focuses too much on this garbage.

So here is a respectable segment on VBS’s Red Bull Rider’s Cup entitled “Rachel”. At least here you can see how someone with reluctance to quit in a predominantly male sport can gain you high accolades. Unlike some of the women above, you can look up to this girl Rachel, even if you’re a dude.

The VBS people just came out with another pretty extreme series called “School Of Surf”. At first I thought it was going to be something like that movie “Surf School” starring one of my favorite singers/actors Sisqo (Thong Song). But to my dismay it’s actually about The Red Bull Rider’s Cup, which is a surf contest like no other. It takes on the team format for high school students to compete against other schools. This is a bit of what Jake Burghart, the producer of this series had to say about the Red Bull Rider’s Cup.

When we first heard of this contest we were like, whatever—not interested. Surf contests are boring. Then we got a call from Brad Gerlach, big-wave surfer and one of my childhood heroes. That kinda changed things. We went out to visit Brad in California, and over a few beers he explained his longtime absence from surf contests, saying that he just wasn’t having fun anymore and he wanted to get back to “the essence of surfing.”

Epicly Later’d and Gino take us to the glory days of skateboarding when tricks were sketchy and the pants rocked, more so than the nut huggers of today. But his “sponsor me” video tapes of the early 90’s proved to be valuable not only in getting him sponsored, but in taking a look back on how a lot of us experienced skating back nearly 20 years ago.

That meant crappy street bumps, 180 kickflips, mom and dad’s VHS camera, and threats on security guards. The best thing to look forward to in this episode has to be Keenan Milton and the second thing has to be Gino’s dancing which is a talent probably unknown to most.

Without Galileo there would be no Newton. Without Snow, there would be no Eminem. Well without FLF’s “Western Front”, you wouldn’t be seeing any of the snowboard videos you are seeing today. Instead you would be seeing the likes of Shaun White doing ski tricks but on a snowboard. Or at least you would be seeing a slower progression of snowboarding because this video started it all.

Even though they look really cute in their hot neon colors and free flowing Buster Poindexter like hair, “Western Front” was the first video to come out that was more of a freestyle form of snowboarding rather than what most videos looked like at the time, promo videos for their team. And even though not many people had the opportunity to see the video in 1988, it set the standard of how snowboard videos were meant to be.

Tonight, Patrick O’Dell and VBS has come back after their long break with the first episode of Gino Iannucci’s 10 part series. It looks like they were working hard during that break. Read these word from Patrick himself…

“Here begins the triumphant return of the Epicly Later’d show. Sorry we went on that long break, I like to think of it as our wilderness years (months are like years in internet time). In our absence it seems the Berrics have beat us out as the place to go to watch skate stuff online, but don’t worry, I’m taking back the title. F those fools. So, what better way to start than with Gino. If you don’t know who Gino is you must have just started skating or been skating under a rock. He’s a legend. I saw him once in line at a grocery store and almost crapped my pants. I don’t have anything else to add, it’s all in the episode. And we will try very hard to not take anymore breaks for the rest of the year. Two parts a week, Thursday and Fridays.”

We’ve been waiting quite a while now for VBS’s new extreme sport series. If you’ve heard my comments before, you know I was hoping it would be a Rollerblade show but instead, we’re graced with Powder & Rails: a series based around the growth and development of snowboarding, going back to its birth. It’s a shame that riders of the sport don’t discuss its origin. I think they probably talk about Speedos more than they talk about early pioneers. So now, we are thankful that VBS has taken the responsibility to have a weekly series on the topic.

“In the late 80s, a bunch of skaters who were bored in the wintertime inadvertently made snowboarding what it is today. They filmed each other not with any sort of historic legacy in mind, but just because that’s what you do when you’re a bunch of dudes who ride around on a piece of fiberglass in the snow all day. Then people saw these videos and started to realize the potential for tricks and big air on a snowboard, and everything else took off from there.

For whatever reason, most snowboarders have never embraced their forerunners with the same enthusiasm as skaters and surfers. That’s why I decided to make this show—as a way of giving credit to the people who took snowboarding from a fringe hobby to something people get paid stupid amounts of money to do. Or at least that’ll be the first few episodes. We’ll see where it goes from there.”
